The Danube breakthrough
25 km up the Danube from Regensburg, is where the famous Danube breakthrough is located. At its narrowest point in Germany, the Danube reaches a depth of nearly 20 meters!
Monastery Weltenburg
Further upstream from the Danube breakthrough, is the Weltenburg Monastery ("Kloster Weltenburg"). It is accessible via a romantic cruise from Kelheim, and houses the oldest brewery in the world.
The Altmühltal
On the way to the Danube breakthrough, starts the beautiful valley of the river Altmuehl ("Altmühltal"). The Altmühltal is a region known for its gorgeous natural park. Particularly noteworthy is Kelheim, with its recognizable Liberation hall, and especially the Roseburg with falconry and Falconer Museum located in Riedenburg.
Walhalla
Down the Danube, in sight of the city, lies the world’s most well known German temple of fame, Walhalla. Its Greek architectural strength dominates the slope of the Danube, from here, the view extends over the broad stream into the Danube landscape and back to Regensburg’s cityscape.
The Bavarian Forest
Just after Walhalla starts the Bavarian forest. The typical German low mountain landscape stretches to the Czech and Austrian borders. Extensive forests alternate with fields and meadows, crossed by small villages and towns.
Industrial noise, pollution and traffic are all foreign here.
In the summer, the mild climate, with temperatures rarely exceeding 25° C, facilitates healthy living. You can move without air conditioning, taking time to linger and enjoy the beauties of nature.
