UNESCO-World Heritage Regensburg

Experience the city of 1,000 monuments

Regensburg has more than 2000 years of history. This can still be seen in the cityscape buildings from the Roman period.  Not only will you find examples from the Roman period but from all following periods in history. Well-preserved architectural gems are to be found in every direction in Regensburg giving life to the extensive history of the city.

Vastly unique in the history of Germany, Regensburg was left virtually unscathed from the last world war.  Regensburg is the only preserved medieval city in Germany.
In 2006, Regensburg was officially added to the list of the UNESCO world heritage cities.  More precisely: the total ensemble “Old Town of Regensburg with Stadtamhof”.

Regensburg’s old town still has the same city layout since the early 14th century.
The uniqueness of this situation is all the more remarkable because the city of the 1,000 monuments functions under this structure to this day, with our 21st century ideals and expectations.  The city’s pedestrian zones, streets and squares are living, breathing examples of history in congruence with present day.

Regensburg, is also referred to as the “Northernmost city of Italy”.  In the beautiful historic old city center one can find everyday workers, traders and residents.  With a myriad of small boutiques, eclectic shops, trendy stores, and street cafés, Regensburg is inviting you to linger, stroll or shop your way through its culture.

Living Culture

If that is not enough, divide your time amongst visits to the countless museums, or take a day trip down the Danube or visit the royal castle from Thurn & Taxis, which is the largest castle ensemble in Europe (even larger than Buckingham Palace of London).

There you will also find the annual Castle Festival, at which Regensburg and its guests are treated to the highest level of quality concerts by international stars.

Green City

The city of Regensburg, with its beautiful avenues and parks scattered throughout, this is especially spectacular in the summers. Many Regensburg citizens enjoy walking under the big old German trees, or relaxing on the Danube or in one of the many shaded beer-gardens or cafés.

In every season

Why not in the winter? You may not be able to work around the seasons (spring, summer, autumn) due to the particular medical needs/urgency. The magic of winter is waiting for you in Germany.  Experience the winter culture, with holiday markets and warm drinks, the coziness of German winter magic.  With a bit of luck, you will even catch the charm of Regensburg covered in snow.
